I painted a model with too many cotes of paint and the detail as been lost because of this I would like to strip off the paint to the bare plastic and start again. How do this with out harming the detail?

Brake fluid will take it off. Be careful and use gloves. It has some bad stuff in it, but it is not any worse than other chemicals that we use.

I have used this method plenty of times with 100% results everytime.
Leave the part fully submerged for about 30 minutes and then work the paint of with a soft brush.
You will be left with the part back down to the plastic.
The plastic will have a matt finish after this process and can then be painted again 100%
Just remember to wash the part afterwards with clean water to get the remaining brake fluid off before priming and painting

Tamiya synthetic lacquer thinner works well.

I'm with gtypecanare on this one. When I was learning weathering techniques, I must have stripped the paint and primer off the wheel bays of a 1/32 F-15E four times with Tamiya Lacquer Thinner. It never harmed the plastic. I'm sure there's a way to go too far with it but I haven't found it yet.

Be warn when using Tamiya Synthetic Lacquer Thinner, use in a well ventilated area
